What is Diabetic Neuropathy?

Diabetic neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that can occur if you have diabetes. High blood sugar (glucose) can injure nerves throughout the body. Diabetic neuropathy most often damages nerves in the legs and feet.

Depending on the affected nerves, symptoms include pain and numbness in the legs, feet and hands. It can also cause problems with the digestive system, urinary tract, blood vessels and heart. Some people have mild symptoms, but for others it can be quite painful and disabling.

Diabetic neuropathy is a serious diabetes complication that may affect as many as 50% of people with diabetes. But you can often prevent it or slow its progress with consistent blood sugar management and a healthy lifestyle.

What is CRPS?

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a form of chronic pain that usually affects an arm or a leg. CRPS typically develops after an injury, a surgery, a stroke or a heart attack. The pain is out of proportion to the severity of the initial injury.

CRPS is uncommon, and its cause isn’t clearly understood. Treatment is most effective when started early. In such cases, improvement and even remission are possible.

What is Golfer's / Tennis Elbow?

Golfer’s elbow is a condition that causes pain where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to the bony bump on the inside of your elbow. It is similar to Tennis Elbow, but the pain is on the inside of the elbow.

It is a repetitive strain injury caused by overuse of the forearm muscles — gripping, lifting and activities that involve repetitive forward bending of the wrist. It may also be called Medial Epicondylitis or Medial Epicondylopathy.

You may experience any or all of the following:

  • Inner elbow pain on gripping, lifting or bending the wrist forward
  • Inner elbow pain on opening jars or twisting movements of the wrist
  • Localised tenderness on the inside of the elbow
  • Stiffness on bending or straightening the elbow joint, particularly first thing in the morning
  • Occasionally mild swelling and heat can be present

Golfer’s Elbow is less common than Tennis Elbow and most commonly affects adults in the 40–60 age group, equally in men and women.

What is Bell's Palsy?

Bell’s palsy is a condition that causes sudden weakness in the muscles on one side of the face. Often the weakness is short-term and improves over weeks. The weakness makes half of the face appear to droop. Smiles are one-sided, and the eye on the affected side is hard to close.

Also known as acute peripheral facial palsy of unknown cause, it can occur at any age. Experts think it is caused by swelling and irritation of the nerve that controls the muscles on one side of the face — possibly triggered after a viral infection.

Symptoms usually start to improve within a few weeks, with complete recovery in about six months. A small number of people continue to have some Bell’s palsy symptoms for life.

What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition that causes intense pain similar to an electric shock on one side of the face. It affects the trigeminal nerve, which carries signals from the face to the brain. Even light touch from brushing your teeth or applying makeup may trigger a jolt of pain.

People may at first experience short, mild episodes of pain, but the condition can get worse over time. It is more common in women and people older than 50.

Trigeminal neuralgia, also known as tic douloureux, doesn’t mean living a life of pain — it can usually be managed with treatment.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common conditions causing heel pain. It involves inflammation of the plantar fascia — a tough, fibrous band of tissue that runs along the sole of the foot, attaching to the heel bone (calcaneus) and to the base of the toes.

The main symptom is pain on the bottom of your foot, around your heel and arch. It is much worse when you start walking after sleeping or resting, and feels better during exercise but returns after resting.

What is Drop Foot?

Foot drop, sometimes called drop foot, is a general term for difficulty lifting the front part of the foot. If you have foot drop, the front of your foot might drag on the ground when you walk.

Foot drop is not a disease — it is a sign of an underlying neurological, muscular or anatomical problem. Symptoms include your foot making a slapping noise as you walk (steppage gait), being unable to hold up the front of your foot, and decreased sensation, numbness or tingling in your foot or toes.

Sometimes foot drop is temporary, but it can be permanent. You might need to wear a brace on your ankle and foot to support and hold it in position.
